David Hicks grew up in Harrison, NY (ten miles north of the Bronx) and attended Nazareth College of Rochester (BA), Saint Bonaventure University (MA), and NYU (PhD). He has been an English professor for many years, but in his forties, he decided to stop writing about writers and start being a writer himself.

Since then, he has published many short stories and a debut novel, WHITE PLAINS (Conundrum Press, now Bower House Books) in 2017. His new novel, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO DANNY (2025) is available from Vine Leaves Press, as well as his children’s book, THE MAGIC TICKET.

David is the Director of Creative Writing at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and the co-founder (with his wife Cynthia) of Electric City Writers.

David is periodically touring and doing events. For details of his appearances and updates on his career, join David’s newsletter at the bottom of this page.

The Gospel According to Danny is a deeply human story about love, fatherhood, and the cost of a divided nation. As Danny grapples with the loss of his values, beliefs, and sense of self, he must ask: Is there anything—or anyone—left to come home to?
